What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a programme to assess progress, vocabulary growth and literacy skills of children. Seeing how well students are performing with regard to reading allows teachers to tailor their teaching accordingly and also to plan intervention strategies when necessary. It also allows library staff to recommend books at appropriate levels to boost literacy skills.
Most of our school library books suitable for S1 and S2 are already in the programme, and students can take several quizzes on the books they read when using the library computers. The students are able to choose among a wide range of books in their reading range. No books in their range will be too complicated, and when they take the related quiz, they will be tested on their comprehension of the text.
The following links provide more information about the programme and the studies behind it.

What is Star Reading?
Star Reading tests are carried out at school under test conditions. This is an adaptive test which assigns children a Reading Range (or ZPD, Zone of Proximal Development). This Reading Range matches the student with a range of books to choose from, where every book will be at the perfect level for the child's ability. Reading books from within this range has been shown to optimise improvements in literacy.
Monitoring Your Child's Progress
We encourage parents and guardians to take an active interest in both their child's reading and their progress using Accelerated Reader. Reading for pleasure is the single greatest indicator of a child's future success. You are able to monitor your child's progress using the Home Connect feature of the programme. Every parent is sent a letter with your child's login details at the beginning of the year. If you need this information provided again, please contact the school library.
