Welcome
Welcome to Carrick Academy English department. Our vision is to ensure that pupils leave school with the literacy and English skills they need to succeed in life, in education and in work. We want pupils to try their best and encourage them to believe in the idea of “progress not perfection”.
Learners can take English from S1 right through to S6, provided they have the entry requirements to do so. At every stage they will develop their reading, writing, talking and listening skills - essential regardless of what the future holds. We believe in making English as enjoyable as possible and as such, learners will experience a range of teaching and learning approaches throughout their time in the department.

How Can Parents Help?
We are often asked how parents can help support learners at home. Here are some suggestions:
- Communication is key. Talk to your child and find out what they are doing in English. Get them to explain things to you and show you work they have been doing in class. Ask them questions and get them to engage in discussion regarding their progress in English. We regularly have conversations with them regarding progress and encourage them to come up with next steps in their learning – they should be able to share these with you.
- Reading is essential. Encourage your child to read a wide variety of texts such as fiction, non-fiction, paper copies of books, e-books, newspaper articles and online articles. Regular reading will help your child enormously, by developing both their written and spoken communication skills (vocabulary, spelling, grammar and their ability to use language for effect). As Roald Dahl said “if you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read.”
- Deadlines matter. Your child will be assigned regular homework - tasks and deadlines will be noted in their homework diaries. Find out what is due and help them to prioritise their time and complete tasks. All homework is designed to consolidate skills taught in class and is essential to their progress in the subject. Moreover, it teaches them invaluable life skills such as time management and organisation.
